THE Toronto District Landcare Group celebrated the completion of an eight-year environmental project yesterday.

The group established a stormwater quality improvement device system on 1 hectare at the bottom of a major catchment area in Blackalls Park.

Volunteers included those from the landcare group, schoolchildren, Scout groups and residents.

Toronto District Landcare Group chaiman Brian Johnson, described the stormwater system as a "mini-wetland".

He said the system, of which there were 44, would help to improve Lake Macquarie's water quality.

Lake Macquarie mayor Greg Piper and MP Jeff Hunter unveiled an educational sign yesterday to mark the project's completion, which Lake Macquarie City Council had supported.
