IN the lead-up to World Environment Day, the Illawarra has been praised for wetland rehabilitation.

The Revive Southern Rivers Wetlands Program concentrates on Tom Thumb Lagoon at Wollongong, Werri Lagoon at Gerringong, Coomonderry Lagoon near Shoalhaven Heads and the Lake Conjola Wetlands.

The program has been nominated as a finalist in the national Banksia Environmental Foundation Awards, with the winner to be announced tomorrow.

A spokesperson for Conservation Volunteers, the group partly responsible for the program, said it had improved the environmental value of the areas targeted and made them more attractive to visitors.
