PORT Stephens Council will consider a management plan today for the protection of Salamander Bay's Mambo wetland area.

The plan is designed to protect and rehabilitate the ecological and cultural values of the 175-hectare site.

It identifies ways to manage threats including weeds and feral animals, bushfire, stormwater run-off, development and litter.

Councillors will consider today whether to adopt, reject or amend the plan with a final decision to be made at an ordinary meeting on February 28.

The council has also endorsed a State Government energy saving initiative but has no funding to deliver it.

The NSW Department of Energy Utilities and Sustainability has asked all high energy using organisations to prepare a plan assessing their energy use and potential energy saving measures. It must be completed by September 30.

But the council has made no allocation for the plan in its 2005-06 budget.

Councillors decided last week to ask the department for an extension.
